“brother owl”

it was getting close to sundown.....i was riding my mountain bike along the flat bike trail that cuts a nearly straight line through woodlands and meadows in pasco county....in my earphones, the spirit of beethoven was accompanied by the hum from my tires on the smooth asphalt....
i would ride for miles with my hands at my side...or in a gesture of freedom, extend them out to the sides like wings....

the pine trees to my left were spaced and straight....the ground was covered with needles and leaves...a carpet rich in earth tones lay cool and quiet in the evening shade.

a turtle was making it's way back home for the night, and a snake glided across the road and into the grass...a soft evening breeze caused the trees to sway with the music...i was at peace with nature and her with me...

as I glided along I watched the sun disappear behind the trees and the beautiful twilight paint new colors on everything....

then from a tall dark tree a large owl took flight and soared the same height as me across the forest floor...with my arms extended we flew side by side....my brother owl and I were for that moment one... I could see though his eyes the trees as they passed...i felt the freedom of flight....i was part of all....i glanced to the road and then back...he was gone from my sight....but in my mind we continued to fly a while longer.

as I continued to ride I thought about my experience, and my brother owl....bsp
